Virgil’s syntax can be a little thorny. Not as free as Horace, perhaps, but Horace has the gift of humour. Virgil specialises more in majesty, pathos, horror and the darker arts. So let’s enjoy the relative transparency of our opening line.
Anna, my sister, what visions terrify anxious me!
Obviously this is terrible, and the translator would have to smooth off the edges. “What terrifying visions torment me,” perhaps. You might not keep the sense of a wakeful night: “What awful visions torture me awake.” That’s getting a little fruity, but the meter is good.
These are the choices you will face all the time if you decide to work on some translations. Nothing is more fun.
