LOVE/HATE
Odi et amo. quare id faciam, fortasse requiris.
nescio, sed fieri sentio et excrucior.
I hate and I love. For what reason it I do, perhaps you ask.
I don’t know, but to happen I feel and I am tortured.
This is what we get from simply substituting English words for the Latin. It’s not bad for a first pass. It should be enough to give you the literal meaning of the poem.
If you can see how the Latin words lead to the English version, you are already reading Latin. Take a moment to enjoy that, then carry on for a slightly more elegant rendition.
