Locus is a place. Parens is a parent. In loco parentis is “in the place of a parent.”

Pro bono work is legal work that is undertaken for the public good. In its fuller form, that is exactly what it means: pro bono publico.

Sometimes a politician or other representative will refuse to comment on something because it is sub judice. This literally means that it is “under the judge:” it is part of a current legal case.

With that, I lapse into a dignified silence. Well done on getting this far. Allow yourself a moment of self-congratulation before we return to the world of Rome in Lesson 13 with a look at one of the Republic’s greatest foes.
