Lesson 5.5 Ovid

ICARUS FALLING

Aut pastor, innixus baculo, vidit hos.

Aut arator, innixus stiva-ve, vidit hos.

aut and the suffix -ve both mean “or.” A pastor is a shepherd or herdsman. Arator is someone who ploughs. The Latin pastor and arator survive in our distinction between pasture and arable land, or land for grazing and land for crops.

innixus – leaning on

baculo – a rod or staff or walking stick

stiva – a plough handle

Or a shepherd, leaning on a stick, sees them.

Or a ploughman, leaning on the plough-handle, sees them.
