Noun Cases 7: The Ablative

THE ABLATIVE CASE

We use the ablative case when something is being done with a noun, or by means of a noun.

vulpes passere petat lapide – the fox attacks the sparrow with a stone

lapide is in the ablative case, because the attack is being done with the stone. The ablative has several other uses, but this will be enough to get you through a lot of reading.
